Growing up in the environment I was in, I learned a lot about gender norms and what was expected between genders. I come from a very old fashioned " men are superior than women" type of environment. In my community the men are supposed to basically dominate all aspects of the females life and seeing that implemented on my sister made me really resent gender norms. I can see clearly that gender norms are wrong, they are based on sexism and should be excluded from society. Humans can be unpredictable we should not expect anything from anyone. The main thing us as people should be doing is treating others the way we want to be treated. The kid in Butler's "Phylosophe" that was killed because he was feminine did nothing wrong. The children that attacked him and threw him over the bridge were harassing him only because they didn't like him or they were uncomfortable with the unknown. This is a big flaw in our society and portrays us as shallow minded. Our new generation needs to learn from our old generation and the mistakes they did. Being so close minded only makes things worse and divided us humans, it causes sexism, racism, stereotyping; all things that start conflict. Maybe if the world wasn't so close minded, the kid with the walk would probably still be alive.

I agree with your response Emmanuel. There has been a change with accepting homosexuals in politics, but many gays are still being harassed and put into danger by people that cannot accept the fact on how they live. Many times people judge others because they were raised with that mentality at home. That we had to be a certain way. But for people to put others down, or hurt them, is unacceptable. Our society needs to be more open minded, I agree. .
ReplyDeleteI agree with your statement because we would think that society accepts everyone for who they are as a person besides of what they look or act physically. This world has diversity in culture, personality, opinion and so on but that does not mean that we are going to discriminate anyone that is different. These gender norms affect our lives completely because instead of acknowledging these individuals for braking this stereotype we make them suffer terribly. Our society needs to look at the big picture and realize with acceptance of change comes a whole lot of possibilities in the future.

ReplyDeleteI agree with you, Emmanuel Ude. The roles of individuals should not be decided on their gender alone. Men are capable of doing things women have conventionally done as well as vice versa. We should not be limited to what the fellow members of our gender have generally been responsible for.
ReplyDeleteI also agree that mankind is very closed-minded. However, whenever their specific person or someone that is dear to them is threatened, their mind suddenly opens up and measurements of an exaggerated degree seem a bit more realistic. For example, it was originally believed that men are the ones suppose to be working and providing. But it has become difficult for only the man to be employed in our society. Struggles will eventually occur. Therefore, the husband is forced to accept that the fact that his wife must work if they are to live healthily.
