Gender Norms

Sadly, there is a connection between complying with gender norms and coercion. Because of gender norms, society has learned to judge, criticize, tease, and even murder other people, as mentioned in Butler's "phylosophe", because they are different and do not follow the norms of society. It is sickening to see people hide who they truly are because they are afraid of their safety and well-being. It is not right for people to lose their lives because of their sexuality or any other differences. I believe that everyone has the right to have their own opinion; however, criticisms should not come to a point where that person feels threatened or giving that person thoughts of suicide. For example, a few years ago, the news reported a young college student committing suicide because he was made fun of his sexuality. This is wrong and does not show a good example of how our society works. During this day and age, people should be able to come out of their bubble and be able to express themselves publicly without being judged. They should not be able to feel threatened or uncomfortable just for being different.

  1. I totally agree with you. We should be giving a good example to our society , not a bad one by Judging other people by the way they are. Everyone has the right to express themselves and be who they are. In this society everyone has opinions and everyone is gonna talk but people have to learn to not pay attention and be who they are because there is no such thing as "normal." Suicide and murder should never cross a persons mind that is just wrong. No one has the right to take someone else's life away just because there expressing who they are. In life everyone is going to be judged but we have to learn to have our heads held up high and not care what others have to say about each other.

  2. I agree with your response. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but people shouldn't take action in their own hands if they cannot accept the fact on another persons way of living. People are hiding or killing themselves because they are living with the constant pain of being judged, not only from peers but it may also be their family members. We as a society must become more open minded and respect one another.

  3. I agree with you Beneve. Everyone deserves to be treated with respect, regardless of there background. People need to be respectful and accept people from there difference. Like how Aydee and Karolina mentioned, people believe that suicide is the way to fix there problems because they have no other way out. This should not be the way for others to think. It can always be our fault for someone killing themselves just because we teased them or made fun of them from there flaws. Our society needs to learn to respect everyone from there differences and realize that everyone is different and unique in their own way.

  4. I agree with your points completely, especially with how disgusting it is to see others hide themselves because they are afraid of society. It is sad that in a world as advanced as it is, we still struggle immensely with issues like this. I also like your point that there is sort of a limit to criticism- as it is not right for one to feel as though they need to end their life.

    1. You do not have to be disgusted on how they choose their lives should be. Because of the fact that they are afraid of coming out and be vulnerable to things such as suicide or bully, they choose to hide their true selves and just wear their mask on. But that does not mean I agree with this statement of mine, it is just that they needed some more time to come out. I happen to choose them to come out instead of hiding, lurking in the shadows.

  5. I completely agree with what you are saying Beneve, not everyone is perfect. Nobody should be ashamed of who they are or how they act, unfortunately our society thinks otherwise. Our society believes that everyone has to act, dress, and even speak a certain way in order to be "normal". We have to realize that we are emotionally hurting people and are causing them to be socially independent. They feel lonely in this world and turn to suicide as their ticket to a better life. Instead we must unite with them and let them know that they are perfect in their own special way.
