Gender Norms

Throughout the years society has become more opened minded about sexuality and gender norms. Gays are accepted more in society than they were a couple centuries back. Even though we have made progress in excepting gays into our community there are still many people that are against homosexuals.

A phrase that stood out to me from Judith Butler was “you will die or I kill you now because you do not comply.” I think what she is trying to say is basically that if you’re an outsider you do not belong in this world. People that think this way are in my opinion ignorant. I believe that no one should be judged on their sexual preferences. Everyone has different opinions on what their gender norms are. Gender norms are usually based on cultural background. Society needs to understand that many things have changed throughout the years including norms.

No one should use coercion to benefit their gender norms. If anyone disagrees with the way a person feels they should not appeal to violence under any circumstances. Killing someone for not meeting someone’s gender norms is immoral.

  1. You make a great point that society has become open-minded towards people's sexuality. I also agree that there are still people out there that are not truly accepting with people's different sexuality. I believe that violence should never be the answer when it comes to this topic. It is not right to kill someone just because they oppose your beliefs in something. It is always sad to hear when someone's life is lost due to their differences with society. Coercion should not be used to make people follow gender norms. Society should simply accept people's differences.

  3. i absouelty agree with you Daisy, that was very well said. In my opinion, it was pretty crazy to see these homosexuals getting married, but at the end, it made me realize that happiness is for everyone. Then, when many people were against it, it was very upsetting because the homosexuals were getting themselves put down. No matter what, people deserve better and must be treated fairly. Those who insult them with murder or frighting threats, they are very ignorant. They need to put themselves in there shoes and realize that its not easy for someone who is homosexual takes a lot of strength for them to show everyone who they truly are. Coercion shouldn't be allowed to put any certain label to gender norms. Everyone is different, and everyone needs to understand that. To those who are LGBT, many wanted to kill themselves because of all the insults and pressure was given to them. Thankfully our society has slowly began to accept gay marriage and it has helped many LGBT to show there true colors.

  4. The sexual preferences of an individual is a decision that should only be done by that individual. They have made a huge change in society by creating more of an open mind on the matter of sexual preferences of people. The people who have an intention of harming someone who the people who dont go with the "normal gender norms" are blinded by the views of others without letting themselves be a thoughtful individual. The issue of the fear of change will not ever change but it can be improved. The aim is at helping and change the views of society. The truth is we can only do so much because there will always be ignorant people. Society is going to gradualy change realizing that they were causing horrible acts that should not be done. Yes, society will change and soon be more open minded on the different events that occur.

  5. I agree with you daisy 100% I believe that violence is the worst thing a person should refer too. People need to realize that there are always going to be humans that don't seem to exist but they need to find a way to just accept it.
