Gender norms and coercion play an important role for situations like the one Judith Butler describes in the YouTube clip, "phylosophe" because it describes certain behaviors that our society considers inappropriate and unacceptable, and for this reason most people feel the need to stare, judge, and sometimes persuade the person to do something against their will by using threats. Many people hide who they are because they fear of not being accepted by others, and most of all, they fear for their own safety. Butler says, "If someone says you must comply with the norm of masculinity, otherwise you will die,...then we have to start to question what the relation is between complying with gender and coercion", this comment stood out to me because I live with people who have that mentality that men and women must behave and act a certain way. As a kid, I was very tom-boyish, and growing up I was told to not act that way or else boys wouldn't want to date me, I had to buy blouses instead of t-shirts, I couldn't do outside chores only the chores that involved me being inside the house, and I had to wear make up everyday to "present myself nicely". The boys in my family must always be strong and tough because where my dad and uncles grew up, which was in Mexico, many homosexual boys are beaten up and often killed because they do not follow the appropriate behaviors of being a "man". Of course my parents were a little open minded and didn't change their kids that much, but from this I do understand why certain individuals would feel threatened. But no one should be killed or harmed for they way they talk and walk, there is no exception.

  1. The idea that my fellow classmate discusses in her post is so accurate. Behaviors that are rare seem to create a negative reaction in the mind of many individuals. The truth is that people are affected by there environmental development and our society sets diversity apart from the overall concept of a community. Such a small thing can create a chaos that can later lead to a chatastrophy like the story in the YouTube clip.

  2. I have seen and experienced similar situations like the ones addressed. Many cultures have gender norms that are expected to be followed. In the Hispanic culture, it is that women should stay home and take care of the children while the men should be the ones working. Women who wanted to play sports, such as soccer, weren't allowed because it was an inappropriate behavior. Times have changed, everyone should be able to do what they want and be who they are. If a boy wants to be feminine, no one should stop him from being like that. His behavior should be accepted just as all other "normal" behaviors. Being different is a positive thing, it is definitely not a negative abnormal behavior.

  3. I completely agree with Aydee’s beliefs. Judgment is something society naturally does. These judgements have led to suicides, bullying, and even homicides. The stare and judgement of society could bring some people’s morality down. It may take one comment to tear a person apart and their desire of living away. I could also relate to you when you talk about your personal experiences. In some places of the world is harder to live your own personal norms. Where I come from, a man had to dress a certain way to look tough and not get beaten. If you act, dress, or looked different than the rest you had to keep your head down hoping you wouldn’t get a beat or taken advantage of. I was lucky enough to be raised to respect other people’s beliefs. Respect is something you gain through actions not through fear.

  4. I agree because a person will bring or show who they are without that really being them, they will be a type of person everyone else would accept and not the way they actually are because of the judgement used in our society today. Like boys who are gay they are scared to share their beliefs because of all the judgement they will receive in the future. Some people are raised with manners and respect but others weren't and will judge a person without realizing a persons feelings could get hurt. Manners and respect is something that should be used as much as judging others is being used today.
